Alaska Board of Game
Fall 2002 Meeting
Anchorage, Alaska

Dear Board Members,

We appreciate the fact that the Board of Game made an agenda change in order to consider the status of wolves in the vicinity of Denali National Park.  The value of these particular wolves for viewing is well known.

In March of 2001, we wrote to you in support of Proposal 11, the enlargement of the area north of Denali National Park closed to taking of wolves. We support the continuation of this closed zone as outlined in Proposal 54.

As we stated in our letter of March 19, 2001, the Denali Citizen’s Council urges the Board of Game to take a look at recent proposals for rail and road development in the Stampede Townships North of Denali. The Tanana Basin Plan guidelines did not favor land disposals there, but instead favored leaving these Townships in state ownership for multiple use management and wildlife habitat.  This area has been important to the Denali caribou herd in the past.  DCC believes that keeping transportation corridors out of this area North of Denali will best promote the health of wildlife both there and in Denali National Park.

We appreciate the opportunity to present testimony.

Sincerely,

Nancy Bale

President, Denali Citizens Council
