Denali Subsistence Resource Commission Meeting at Denali National Park

The Denali Subsistence Resource Commission (SRC) meeting is being held on Saturday, August 27 at the Murie Science and Learning Center in Denali National Park and Preserve. The public is invited to attend the meeting, which will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
The commission will consider a range of issues related to subsistence hunting and fishing in the 1980 additions to Denali National Park and Preserve. Select agenda items for the meeting include updates on the following topics: Denali’s Subsistence Hunting Management Plan, the review of the Federal Subsistence Program, current and upcoming research projects. Public testimony opportunities will be provided in the morning and in the afternoon.

Agenda items for the meeting include updates on: management issues with the state of Alaska, the Horns, Antlers, Plants, and Bones Environmental Assessment, current and upcoming research projects, and wildlife regulatory proposals. Alaska Supreme Court decision on wildlife management has broad implications

We read with interest the decision by the Alaska Supreme Court on an appeal brought by Defenders of Wildlife and the Alaska Wildlife Alliance questioning the constitutionality of single species management (e.g. predator control programs). The Supreme Court declined the appeal, ruling that the state constitution gives the Department of Fish and Game the authority to conduct predator control as part of its toolbox to manage for sustained yield. Under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, motorized uses that had been used for subsistence in the Denali Park additions could be continued. The details of how to implement this policy provided the basis for an Environmental Assessment.

A unique exception in ANILCA would permit the use off road motorized vehicles if that use was traditional. After extensive research NPS determined that such use was traditional in a specific area near Cantwell. Our comments during public outreach expressed specific concerns. We opposed the building of a new trail on the Bull River.
